SCB and Siriraj Win Global Award for Digital Payment Solution Revolutionizing Government Payment Systems with a Focus on Sustainability

Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) and the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, have joined hands to leverage digital technology in setting a new standard for government agencies in terms of efficiency, transparency, and innovation. With the “SCB Digital Payment Solution,” the hospital has transitioned from a traditional check issuing system to a fully digital system. This transformation has eliminated over 26,800 checks, significantly reducing resource and energy consumption, equivalent to 93 tons of carbon emissions or the annual carbon dioxide absorption capacity of 10,000 trees. The initiative has earned international recognition from The Asset in the category of empowering the medical sector through sustainable finance. Siriraj Hospital aims to fully digitize its payment system by 2026, becoming a centennial institution laying the foundation for sustainable digital technology aligned with ESG principles for Thai society.

Prof. Dr. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, stated that Siriraj Hospital and SCB have collaborated to integrate financial technology into hospital operations, supporting sustainable development goals (SDGs). This includes back-end and front-end systems such as the “Siriraj Connect” application, which streamlines services for hospital users. Most recently, the SCB Digital Payment Solution has revolutionized the hospital’s vendor payment system, replacing the check-based process that required paper receipts. The new system enables fast, convenient payments and contributes to sustainability by effectively reducing energy and resource consumption and operational costs.

Mr. Thanawatn Kittisuwan, First Executive Vice President, Head of Digital Business and Payment Solutions Function at SCB, added that the bank and Siriraj Hospital—a major public hospital with sustainability goals—successfully implemented the SCB Digital Payment Solution to enhance vendor payments. This marks a significant milestone for government agencies in terms of efficiency, transparency, and innovation. The solution includes SCB Supplier Payment, an automatic fund transfer service supporting both SCB and non-SCB accounts. It has replaced over 26,800 checks annually and allows vendors to download withholding tax certificates in a file format, improving operational convenience and reducing energy and resource consumption.

Since adopting the digital payment solution in 2024 through April 2025, Siriraj Hospital has achieved tangible sustainability outcomes, including:

  • Reducing carbon emissions by 93 metric tons per year — equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide absorption of approximately 10,000 trees (based on an average absorption rate of 9.5 kg of CO per tree per year).
  • Cutting costs associated with issuing 26,800 checks
  • Saving 650,000 sheets of paper throughout the payment processing
  • Reducing travel distance for check delivery by over 1.4 million kilometers/year
  • Saving over 480 work hours related to check processing

These results highlight the hospital’s successful digital transformation and its positive impact on sustainability.

Thanks to this success, SCB and Siriraj Hospital proudly received The Asset’s award for excellence in empowering the medical sector through sustainable finance. Siriraj Hospital plans to fully transition to digital payments by 2026, with SCB as a key partner, aiming to become a centennial organization pioneering sustainable digital technology according to the ESG principles for Thai society.
