Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram Temple

WatAmphawanChetiyaram is located near King Rama II Memorial Park and belongs to the Bang Chang family. It was commissioned by the mother of Queen Amarintharamat, who married King Rama I, and she once lived behind this beautiful temple. It is believed that the area where the Prang (or spire) is standing is the birthplace of King Rama II.

WatAmphawanChetiyaram was renovated several times by Kings Rama III, IV, and V. At present, it is a royal temple of the second class. The Ubosot (ordination hall) and permanent structures within the temple were mostly created in the early Rattanakosin style of art and architecture. In addition, King Rama II is also memorialized here.

To get there, take a bus at the Municipal Market of Amphoe Mueang Samut Songkhram, travelling from Mae Klong to Bang NokKhwaek and Ratchaburi, and get off in front of WatAmphawanChetiyaram. Alternatively, start driving on Highway 35 (Thon Buri–Pak Tho). At Km 63, drive through the town of SamutSongkhram and go on for another 6 kilometers to turn right to Highway 325 (SamutSongkhram – Bang Phae). Take a left turn between Km 36-37 for around 1 kilometer.

This park was built to honor King Rama II and is run by a royally-supported foundation. King Rama II was awarded the status of Person of the World by UNESCO for his contributions to the arts and culture of Thailand, and his achievements are celebrated in this compound. In addition, the King Rama II Museum, composed of four buildings, houses artifacts from the early Rattanakosin era, King Rama II’s household furniture, and showcases the lives of Thais during the king’s reign.

Bang Kung Camp

Following the second defeat of the Ayutthaya kingdom in 1767, the king relocated his navy to this campsite. A wall was built, making a temple, Wat Bang Kung, not only the spiritual center of the camp but also the physical center. As King Taksin the Great later ordered Chinese soldiers from various provicnces to guard the camp, the camp came to be known as Bang Kung Chinese Camp. A year later, Ayutthaya was successfully reclaimed, and the campsite was left deserted for almost 200 years before the Ministry of Education built a shrine to memorialize King Taksin the Great’s achievements.

Within the camp compound, there is an ordination hall built in the Ayutthaya period and now covered with lush ficus. Upon arriving at the compound, visitors will also see a replica wall built to celebrate King Taksin the Great’s battle with invading forces.

The land utilization is aimed to carry on Thai folk wisdom, and preserve ways of life of Amphawa people. In addition, Amphawa has its long history reflecting Thai heritage, late generations can therefore trace back its glorious past and realize Amphawa as a splendid Thai cultural and traditional community through the exhibition, and conservation of Amphawa cultural items. Amphawa residents have been proud of their background themselves.

“Amphawa Chaipattana Nurak Conservation Project” has divided its area into many sections; the history of Amphawa Society and the King’s Sufficiency Economy, Agricultural Demonstration Farm (e.g. Coconut orchard and other plants), Nakhawarang Cultural Playground (which is named after its donator), space for organizing activities, and Amphawa souvenir shops. Inside the building is a local Amphawa museum, which displays those discovered household items in Amphawa district. Moreover, Amphawa also has villager’s shops, Chaan Chala Coffee & Tea House (where visitors can drop by to get some drinks and snacks), a 200-year-old coffee shop with its vintage interior atmosphere. Travellers can visit Ban Khru Eua (or Khru Eua’s House) located near the Project area. Mae Klong Railway Market (Hoop Rom Market)

Mae Klong Railway Market (Hoop Rom Market) is a local market in Samut Songkhram Province, commonly called Siang Tai (life-risking) Market. It is considered one of amazing-Thailand attractions in the province. Spreading over a 100-metre length, the market is located by the railway near Mae Klong Railway Station, Mueng District, Samut Songkhram Province. It is a common fresh market selling seafood, vegetable, fruits, fresh and dried food, meats and other miscellaneous goods. Mae Klong Railway Market is open from 6.00 a.m. -6.00 p.m.

The market is called ‘life-risking’ market because its stalls are attached to the Mae Klong-Ban Laem railway, which is a short railway line running from and to Mahachai and Mae Klong. Vendors at the market put out parasols or canvas to protect themselves against the sun. The shelters stick into the railway where visitors walk and do their shopping. When each signal of the arriving train rings, chaos happens: vendors will rush to close their parasols and canvas, along with clearing all goods that will obstruct the coming train at a great speed. Once the train passes, parasols and canvas will be reopened as goods are again put into their usual place next to the railroad.
The market, accordingly, is so called ‘Hoop Rom (umbrella/parasol-closing) Market’. The practice is usual for vendors and local people, but not for tourists who will definitely find the scene exciting and enjoyable at each visit. The parasol-closing event happens eight times per day according to the time that trains leave Mahachai for Mae Klong and depart Mae Klong for Mahachai. Trains will arrive at Mae Klong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m., and depart the station at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

Don Hoi Lot

A favourite stop for tourists to SamutSongkhram is the pristine sandbar at the mouth of the Mae Klong River: Don Hoi Lot, named for the abundant indigenous “Hoi Lot” or razor clams. The 3-kilometer-by-5-kilometer stretch spans two zones: Don Nok lies at the mouth of Ao Mae Klong, accessible by boat, and Don Nai is located on the beach of the Chuchi village in Tambon Bang Chakreng and on the beach of the Bang Bo village in Tambon Bang Kaeo, accessible by car.

A nearby shrine offers live music in the late afternoons on the first and third weeks of the month, and neighboring restaurants offer a delicious range of fresh and dried seafood for souvenirs. Be sure to take advantage of the lingering low tides between March and May and hire a boat from the nearby Aphon Pavilion for a scenic tour.
