SCB Launches ‘Aunty Savvy Outsmarts the Scams’ Series to Advance Financial Literacy, Combat AI-Era Fraud, and Empower Seniors as the Frontline Protectors of Lifelong Savings
Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) is reinforcing its commitment to financial literacy while tackling increasingly complex and severe threats in the digital age—particularly as scammers exploit advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. To address these challenges, the Bank has launched the “Aunty Savvy Outsmarts the Scams” series, designed to equip seniors with financial resilience and transform them from a traditionally “vulnerable group” into the “frontline” defenders against fraud. This initiative highlights SCB’s role in protecting customer interests not only through secure transactions but also by fostering long-term financial confidence and security.
According to recent data from the Royal Thai Police and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), financial fraud in Thailand caused losses exceeding THB 25 billion last year. Elderly victims suffered average losses of THB 68,000 per case—35% higher than working-age victims. For many seniors, the losses meant their last nest egg—painstakingly built over a lifetime of effort and savings. Alarmingly, fraud cases targeting seniors rose from 16% in 2021 to 23% in 2024, reflecting a shift from indiscriminate “casting nets” to deliberate “targeting,” especially of seniors with retirement savings and emotional vulnerabilities.
Modern financial scams increasingly leverage digital channels and advanced technologies. AI voice cloning, for example, can replicate voices from short video clips and impersonate loved ones in emergencies to pressure victims into transferring money—making detection difficult even for experts. These trends highlight that today’s cyber threats often begin not with system breaches but by manipulating users into making transactions themselves under stress, fear, or urgency.
SCB has continuously invested in cybersecurity, enhancing transaction systems and mobile banking safeguards. However, the Bank recognizes that technology alone is insufficient, as most losses stem from customers being deceived into making transactions themselves. Therefore, “awareness and verification before decision-making” remain the most critical defenses.
Ms. Indira Chitranukroh, Executive Vice President, Head of Marketing at SCB, stated:
“SCB acknowledges the fast-evolving complexity of financial threats. We have expanded our role from system security to empowering customers and society with knowledge and awareness. True safety does not come from technology alone but from user understanding. This aligns with SCB’s long-standing commitment to financial literacy. We aim to help customers make informed financial decisions, which is the foundation of long-term stability and sustainability.”
As part of its ongoing “Fraud Fighter” campaign, SCB introduces the “Aunty Savvy Outsmarts the Scams” series, created specifically for seniors. Featuring the character Aunty Savvy—a modern senior who continues to learn, asks questions, and refuses to be a victim—the series presents real-world scam scenarios, including fraudulent investments and multi-level marketing schemes, impersonation of relatives or government officials, charity fraud, and malicious app downloads. Each episode is designed to spotlight scam tactics, highlight warning signs, and provide practical steps for prevention and verification.
The initiative adopts an edutainment approach, making complex financial threats easy to understand, engaging, and shareable. It equips seniors—often seen as prime targets of scammers—to become savvy defenders who can share their knowledge with those around them, especially within families, which serve as the first line of protection against financial loss. Key formats of the “Aunty Savvy Outsmarts the Scams” series include:
SCB believes digital safety requires collaboration between technology, processes, and user behavior. While systems reduce risks, “user awareness and decision-making” remain the ultimate safeguard—especially for seniors, where a single mistake could mean losing lifelong savings.
“This initiative reflects SCB’s vision as a Digital Bank with a Human Touch, committed to protecting not just customers’ accounts but their digital lives. We hope the ‘Aunty Savvy Outsmarts the Scams’ series under the ‘Fraud Fighter’ campaign will empower seniors to live confidently and protect themselves from cyber threats in the digital era,” Ms. Indira added.
The series is now available via SCB’s “Fraud Fighter” website www.scb.co.th/th/personal-banking/fraud-fighter and SCB Thailand’s social media channels.
