Update #2: Incident at SCB Head Office

Regarding the incident that took place at the Siam Commercial Bank head office underground floor  on Sunday 13th March 2016 around 9.30 pm, the Bank would like to inform the public that the affected area was undergoing improvements to the building's fire security system for increased efficiency at the time. As part of that process, a fire extinguishing agent was being changed from pyrogen gas to nitrogen gas, a cleaner agent, both of which meet international safety standards. The Bank contracted Mega Planet company to undertake the improvements, and completion of the project is still scheduled for March 2016 as planned.

As a result of the incident there were eight dead and seven injured. The Bank would like to express our deep regret  for this event and the loss of life and injuries. The Bank has offered a financial contribution of 100,000 Baht for religious ceremonies to each of the families of those who passed away.  Those injured and now hospitalized will receive initial financial assistance of 30,000 Baht each and bank executives have visited the victims.

Regarding the investigation of the incident, during the morning of March 14 police officers led by Lieutenant General Sanit Mahathavorn, Acting Metropolitan Police Bureau Chief, together with officers from the Police Forensic Science Office investigated the area where the mishap occurred. SCB has rendered full cooperation in terms of information and evidence to assist all concerned authorities in conducting fact finding to determine the cause of the incident. The officers expect to finalize their conclusions this week.

The Bank sincerely appreciates efforts by all parties concerned, including police officers, officers from the Chatuchak District Office, firemen, and volunteers who performed their duties to their fullest capacity during the incident.

Update #1: Incident at SCB Head Office

Following an incident that took place at the Siam Commercial Bank head office underground floor on 13 March 2016 around 9.30 pm, the Bank would like to inform the public that it was neither a fire nor an explosion. The situation is now well under control.

From the preliminary investigation by the police, the incident may have been caused by the negligence of contractors who were hired to make additional improvements to the building's fire security system. While carrying out their tasks, a chemical agent used as a fire extinguisher, pyrogen gas, was inadvertently activated and exhausted all the oxygen in the area. As a result, there was loss of life and injuries, with the latest toll being 8 dead and 7 injured. The injured are now being treated in hospitals.

The Bank would like to express our deep regret for those affected, especially those injured and those who lost their lives during this unfortunate incident. The Bank will provide initial assistance as deemed appropriate. The area is now under investigation by police and concerned authorities, and further details will be reported.

SCB's headquarters have not been affected by the incident and the bank will operate as normal.
